Please join me in welcoming my good friend, Celeste Holloway. I'm giddy about having her here to promote her new release SEBASTIAN FALLS. 

You see, Celeste and I started out in the publishing/writing arena around the same time. That's how we met. We've encouraged one another over the years and through our publication processes. 1.      What do you do when you aren’t writing?

I have a nine-year-old daughter, so if she isn’t in school, we’re hanging out. We love to watch movies, shop, and spend time at the library. Recently, she decided to be an Olympic runner, so I guess my new hangout will be the track.

2.      Do you make your bed every morning?

Yes!!!!! I’ve tried not to, but it haunts me until I do it. (I hate making the bed.)

3.      Tell us about your driving skills. Ever get road rage?

Ha! I guess I’m the passive aggressive type, so if another driver is on my nerves, I usually call them a stupid jerk without rolling down the window. As for my driving skills, I rarely break the speed limit. (My grandfather was one of the original NASCAR drivers in the 40s, so speed is in the blood. I have a lead foot.)

4.      What’s your favorite drink? Tea? Coffee? Wine? Other? All?

I’m  a Diet Pepsi-aholic, but I’m trying hard to kick the habit.

5.      Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate, all the way!

6.      What’s one thing that makes you proud? (Besides writing your book. We all know that will make you proud. :) )

My daughter, Letty, she’s a determined kid with a beautiful heart and giving hands. (We need to hook her up with my son!)

7.      How are you going to celebrate the release of your book?

I wish I had an exciting answer for this one, but so far, smelling the pages is all I have planned. (When we finally meet in person, we'll do a celebratory dinner.)

8.      Describe yourself using only words that start with “B” or “M”.

Bold (Beautiful, Brave, Magnificient, Mother.)

9.      Describe your everyday style. What would we see if we ran into you in Walmart?

Go ahead and call the fashion police! Usually, it’s jeans and t-shirts for me.

10.  What’s your biggest pet peeve?

People broadcasting their good deeds. (Oh, good one...Did I ever tell you about the time...Just kidding.) 

11.  Tell us something about yourself that few people know. For instance, I am trying to be an extreme couponer, and I occasionally drink chocolate syrup from the bottle. J

Awesome!!! I always wanted to try couponing, but I called Honey Boo-Boo’s mom for help, and she turned me away. Maybe you can show me how to be a super saver! Okay, sorry I got sidetracked. Something few people know about me. . . . I’m sort of creeped out by the dark, but not being outdoors in the dark. Also, cows freak me out. (You did NOT just say, "Honey Boo-Boo" on my blog.)

12.  What was your favorite chapter to write and why?

The first because it held a ton of possibilities and hope.

13.  Describe your writing environment.

I’ve heard of writers who write in a room filled with people and noise, but I’m not that kind of a writer. I need silence and privacy. Usually, I write in the living room on my recliner, but when I’m rich and famous, (I can dream) I’ll have a fancy office with a deadbolt on the door. J

14.  Name 4 things that make you want to go “EEEEEEK!”

 1. Spiders

 2. Running out of hair conditioner

 3. Stepping in poo-poo

 4. Large men in speedos (HA!)

15.   If you owned and ice cream company and sold your signature version of Neapolitan, what three stripes of flavor would be in the box?

Crud, that’s a hard one. Give me a sec. . . . Peanut butter, cheesecake, and blueberry, yep those are my final picks. (I like all those flavors, but I can't say I'd try them together.)

           

16.  You’re throwing a dinner party.  The guests are Mark Harmon, Agatha Christie, Jay Asher, James Roday, Pope Francis and me.  What do you serve?  WHAT DO YOU SERVE?

Mark Harmon, really? (Hey, my mother would love to have Mark Harmon to dinner. She's a NCIS fan. DO NOT call her while it's on. She won't answer.) Welp, since I believe in putting on the glitz, I’m calling the chefs from Mt. Fuji, so they can squirt fake ketchup in the Pope’s face while saying, “Yummi, yummi!” After the poor guy falls out of his chair, Agatha Christie might steal a bite of steak off his plate and secretly hope he dies. That way, she can cook up a new novel, called, Death and Sushi. Of course, Jay Asher will feel his creative vibes and turn competitive. He’ll snatch up her fried rice and toss it at the chef to create a diversion. This enables him to chat up James Roday about directing his next hit, Six Reasons to Pick Different Dinner Guests. You don’t mean to do it, but you can’t help but listen to the two of them whispering, and you slap Jay for suggesting you guys are crappy dinner guests. The unsuspecting Jay stands, holding his cheek, and Mark Harmon opens his fortune cookie, then dances around the chef. Of course, the chef has no idea why Mark’s hopping around on one foot, so he slams his spatula on the table and cracks an egg over your head. (What? Why do I get the egg?) The excitement is too much for him. His brain is overloading. He meant to crack the egg in the skillet, but he’s losing control. Seeing the flames in your eyes, (it’s a reflection of the fire) I usher Chef Yummi out of my house and as a peace offering, I hand you a cranberry orange scone. (As long as my dad made them, I accept.) J

Broken Wings-- Shannon Dittemore Blog tour

Please welcome back Shannon Dittemore, author of the Angel Eyes trilogy. She's here to talk to us a little about the second in the series, Broken Wings, and to share with us ten fun facts about her. 

Broken Wings and Shannon Dittemore: Ten Facts

1.   The Angel Eyes trilogy is set in Stratus—a fictitious town in Central Oregon. The author, Shannon Dittemore, loosely modeled Stratus after several different small towns in the Pacific Northwest.

2.  The pianist at the little church in town is named after Shannon’s youngest sister, Stephanie, who is a musician in her own right.

3.   In the early chapters of Broken Wings we meet the Prince of Darkness. Shannon has played Satan in more than one church production. The first costume included a pair of fuzzy red mittens and red makeup that stained her face for days.

4.   Jake has hazel eyes—green with a russet flame bleeding from the center—just like Shannon’s husband, Matt.

5.   Early versions of Broken Wings had scenes that took place in South America. While those have all been cut, Kaylee’s obsession with Peru is a nod to those early drafts.

6.  The old men who’ve taken up court outside the Donut Factory were inspired by a collection of eclectic gentlemen who hung out at a local doughnut shop in Shannon’s hometown.

7.  Like Brielle, Shannon’s favorite musical is Les Miserables.

8. The first draft of Broken Wings was written during National Novel Writing Month. Not a single word of that draft was kept.

9.  There are a handful of Peter Pan references throughout the series. Shannon nurses a mild obsession with the tale.

10.  And finally, Jake visits the Evil Deeds tattoo parlor. Shannon has one tattoo. She’s a wuss and will not be getting any more.

Blog Tour-- Elizabeth Seckman

Please welcome back, Elizabeth Seckman. She's on a blog tour for her awesome new book, Healing Summer. As part of the tour, I was asked to give her a question to answer here on my blog. I asked if she'd be willing to tell a few of her family traditions, you know, coming off the holiday and all. So, here's Elizabeth to tell us about birthdays with four boys. 

As I pack away the final boxes of the holiday season, I reflect on a year of family traditions  that I hope give my kids the roots they need for their wings to be strong.

Each new year begins with the cycle of birthdays. My husband and I started the tradition of the “Star Studded Birthday Weekend” when our boys were young.  We have four of them spaced closely together in age. As of right now, we have an eighteen, a sixteen, a fifteen, and a twelve-year-old.

We have an active, busy house most every day of the year, and we look for opportunities to slow down any chance we can. We also look for ways to separate the boys from the pack, to make them feel special. That’s important in a house where on most days, the boys are cared for in an assembly line from breakfast, to bath, to bedtime.

So, on the weekend closest to the birthday boy’s special day that guy rules the roost. He gets first dibs on the seat choice in the car, game or activity selection (and everyone has to play!), and of course the menu is all his too. We have some fun memories. The boys could get really creative in their planning. We’ve had whole weekends of video games like Halo, or back in the good old days, Gauntlet Dark Legacy challenges…and every now and then they unplug for a game of Monopoly or Pictionary.

In a house where our kids have been forced to share everything but underwear and toothbrushes, this is simply a nice way to celebrate and let a guy feel like a king!

Author Tracy Krauss--Top Ten excuses

Please welcome author, Tracy Krauss and her excuses for not writing. 

This is downright embarrassing. I’m about to reveal the number one reason I don’t always get around to writing.  I can sum it up in two letters. TV.

Okay, there I’ve said it. When Jessie put out the call for authors to write a post on why they DON’T write, I had a few other thoughts pop into my mind. Things that would sound a whole lot more legit.

For instance, I spend a lot of time marketing and promoting my work. Although I am trying to become more efficient, it isn’t uncommon for me to spend three hours in an evening online. I’ve even set aside entire days on the weekend or during the summer to ‘catch up’ on all the online promoting that seems to be part of the ‘new era’ in publishing.

I also blog. While I could lump this into the above ‘marketing’ category, blogging for me has become something more than that. I love journaling and from way back I have been filling journals with my thoughts, frustrations, dreams, and prayers. Since I started blogging over three years ago, I find that I write many of these things on my blog instead.  While I still keep a personal journal, many of the things that aren’t too personal have found their way onto my blog. It takes time to blog consistently and to keep coming up with new content. As part of a few writing groups, I also post on a couple of group blogs. While it is still ‘writing’, it’s not the same as writing creatively, a.k.a. writing fiction, which is what I’m lamenting here.

Oh, I could mention that I work full time as a high school teacher; that I direct an amateur theatre group which rehearses an average of four hours a week plus puts on two productions a year; that I coordinate the worship at my church and most Sundays lead as well; that I am on the executive of the local Arts Council; that I have a husband and home to look after not to mention four grown children, family and friends…

All of this stuff – LIFE – takes time.

However, when I stopped to examine why I am not writing as much as I want to each day, I had to admit that all of the above are not the things that are interfering with my word count. Watching TV is the number one reason I don’t write as much as I’d like to. This isn’t really a revelation. I decided I needed to address my ‘addiction’ a few months ago. However, it is something that kind of snuck up on me unawares.

For most of my adult life I have not had much interest in TV. After thirty years of marriage we only just got satellite TV four years ago. We were satisfied with one channel (CBC - The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) My daughters’ idol growing up was Peter Mansbridge – the long time anchor of ‘The National’ (CBC news), and other than ‘George Stroumboulopoulos’ or ‘Hockey Night In Canada’, we were satisfied with renting videos once in awhile to satisfy our TV urges. 

To appease our then teenaged son when we moved in 2008, we promised that we would get satellite TV so that he could watch TSN and all the sports he wanted.  He has since flown the coop, but guess what? Mom and Dad are the ones who got addicted to TV.  HGTV is my main culprit, while my husband favours all those crime scene investigation shows. Part of the problem is our open concept living space. In our previous homes, the TV was in a separate room. Watching TV was an intentional activity. Not so now! It seems to be on all the time. Sometimes I turn it on and tell myself I’ll just watch a tiny bit while I make dinner, but inevitably I end up watching the entire episode. When my husband comes home in the evening he likes to spend time with me.  If one of his shows in on, I try to work on my laptop at the same time, but it’s hard to concentrate on your own plot when another murder has just taken place right in front of you…

My daughters have advised that we cancel our satellite subscription. (All three of them are very sensible.) They love to point out that they never had the luxury of so much TV while growing up and add that my husband and I have become worse than the average teenager. I argue that I need it for research. All that TV watching is helping me stay in touch with current cultural trends. Plus, now that CBC no longer broadcasts my football team’s games, I couldn’t possibly go without it. They just shake their collective heads. We could be investing all that money in our retirement fund, they say.  *Sigh*

Never fear. A plan is in the works. We are currently renovating a new house and when we move in we are most definitely, absolutely, without question, going to cancel our satellite subscription. With that in mind I need to go watch another decorating show. I need some new ideas for my new kitchen. *Smile*

Top Ten Reasons Not to Write-- J. F. Jenkins

Please help me welcome back, author, J. F. Jenkins of Astraea Press. Check out Jenkins's books on Amazon, B&N and Astraeapress.com. (see links at the bottom of the page.) Now, tell us all your fabulous excuses that keep you from writing.

Why I DON'T Write (in no particular order):

1)      I have a toddler. I really think that should be self explanatory, but in case it isn't here's why: he needs a lot of attention, he likes to jump on me, he tries to break my computer...A LOT. Just watching him sucks up all of my energy these days.

2)      Sleep. This is probably a big one. My need for sleep usually takes up a lot of my free time that I have to write. (Amen to that! Naps rock.)

3)      Working the day job. I've gotta earn money some how! Writing doesn't always pay the bills, sorry! The day job takes not only more of my time, but also a great deal of my energy.

4)      Video games are my next biggest reason why I don't write. Why? Because sometimes I just need to do something relaxing and not taxing to my brain.”

5)      Bad reviews. We all get them. It's part of the business. But I don't feel like writing when someone tells my book is stupid, that they could have written better “crap” than that, and that they should get their money back. Who wants to write a book after seeing that written about their heart and soul?

6)      My muse sometimes doesn't want to work with me. It's frustrating and annoying.

7)      There are days where I'd rather be reading, doing anything, but writing. Sometimes I just don't feel like it!

8)      My husband likes to suck up my time by running errands together. ( HA! )

9)      Health problems. We all have them on occasion. Some days, they just take over and ruin everything.

10)  Excuses. I come up with a lot of reasons as to why I should be doing something that isn't writing. Most of them aren't good ones.

Author Interview Cathy Bennett

Charlie didn’t look at him. She simply folded her arms and stared straight ahead. They sat in angry silence for a few minutes. She wiped the back of her hand under her runny nose. He snapped open the glove box, handed her a tissue, and leaned back in the seat.

“What did you hear back there?” he asked finally.

“Everything.”

Evan ran his hand through his hair. “Did Amanda know you were spying?”

“Even if she did, you’ve got control over what you say. Over what you do.”

“I know. I know. I was angry. She was pushing me.”

“Angry? So that’s your excuse? That’s why you kissed her?” She balled her fist up and he flinched. Good. Let him be afraid. Let him be very afraid.

Author Penelope King

 I'm so excited to have my friend Penelope King with us today. Penelope and I met when I was submitting my manuscript to agents a few years ago. We became beta readers for each other and have become friends through our writing. She is awesome, and her writing is AMAZING!
